The Department of Elections announced that the United People s Freedom Alliance has won the 2010 General Elections obtaining a total of 144 seats in the 14th Parliament. The UPFA obtained the highest number of votes in Trincomalee and Kandy Districts at the repolls in Kumburupiddy and Nawalapitiya held yesterday.
UPFA received a total of 339,819 votes in the Kandy District with 60.77 per cent obtaining 8 seats while the United National Party received 192,798 votes with 34.48 per cent obtaining 4 seats.
The UPFA won two seats at the repoll in Trincomalee District obtaining 59,784 votes with 42.78 per cent. United National Party and Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi won one seat each with UNP obtaining 39,691 votes and ITAK obtaining 33,268 votes with 28.40 per cent and 23.81 per cent respectively.
The voter turnout was 62.2 per cent in Trincomalee while Kandy recorded a voter turnout of 53.54 per cent.
The repolling was peaceful yesterday according to the Department of Elections. The People s Action for Free and Fare Election , described the repolls as peaceful and uneventful. Center for Monitoring Election Violence said that there had been significantly fewer incidents of election related violence during the repolls.
With the final results of the repolls, the UPFA will obtain 127 District basis seats along with 17 National basis seats a total of 144 seats in parliament which is only 6 seats short of its target of a two thirds majority . It has obtained a total of 4,846,386 votes 60.33 per cent island wide.
The UNP will obtain a total of 60 seats which comprise 51 on District basis and 9 on National basis. ITAK and Democratic National Alliance have won a total of 14 and 7 seats respectively.
